Miracle

The Song: Miracle

Rumours started flying
About water into wine
Sight to the blind
And that he’d even raised the dead
The biggest miracle
Was that everyone believed it
And that’s why Jesus wept

The Bible: The wedding at Cana

The Gospel according to John, Chapter 2, Verses 1 to 12 (John 2: 1 – 12).

The Story:

Jesus and his friends are at a wedding. Jesus’ mother is there too. And the wine runs out – a huge embarrassment when so many guests are expecting to party for a week (or two).

Jesus’ mother points this out to Jesus, who shrugs his shoulders and says, “So what?” But mum knows best, and she tells the waiters, “Do whatever he tells you”.

Jesus sees six stone water jars that are used for ritual washing, and tells the servants to fill them up with water. And to take some to the master of ceremonies. The MC tastes it, and it’s the best wine ever. Six hundred litres of it! That should keep the party going.

That’s all John tells us.

Then he tells us
why he’s told us:

‘This was the first of Jesus’ signs… He revealed his glory and his friends believed in him.’

Bible scholars identify seven of these ‘signs’ in John’s gospel. All of them are in response to people doing what Jesus tells them – and they progressively reveal the divergent attitudes of those who will come to believe that Jesus is the Messiah… and those who won’t.
