Small Voice Calling > The Voice > Slide Away the Screen
“The sessions that led to this album were the most enjoyable I have known.”

Dave Pegg was an inspired choice as producer of Ralph McTell’s next album. To create the ‘band’ sound Ralph had long craved, the musicians ‘Peggy’ assembled included past and present members of Fairport Convention. Indeed, with two or more of Peggy, Simon Nicol, Jerry Donahue, Richard Thompson and Dave Mattacks on most tracks, ‘Slide Away the Screen’ could almost have passed for a ‘Fairport’ album. Ralph even included his re-working of Dave Swarbrick’s ‘White Dress’ as a tribute to Sandy Denny.
Ralph wrote, on the 1979 LP inner sleeve, “The sessions that led to this album were the most enjoyable I have known”; a sentiment echoed by Dave Pegg on the 1994 CD insert: “We all had a wonderful time up at Chipping Norton Studios and it still remains one of my favourite albums”.
